Wi Fi Device Disables Internet Access

I purchased a D-Link DWL-122 USB wireless unit to use with
my Toshiba laptop running Windows XP Home. It installed
flawlessly and even picked up some neighbors' access
points. But... When I try to use my dialup to access the
internet, I have problems.

I can't retrieve email, and my program (Eudora) comes back
with the "server not found" message. And I can't view any
web pages with IE 6.0.

I tried different methods of installation, from shutting
down Virus Scan to turning off the firewall. Still no
effect. In order to get my computer working properly
again, I had to do a System Restore.

This is the second Wi Fi device I've tried to install, and
I get the same results.

Anyone else run into this problem?

Perhaps you haven't set up your PC's networking correctly? There is
the matter of whether your access point it set up as a DHCP server or
for peer to peer networking, and your PC (or PC's) must also be set up
the same. If you're using WEP (or other) encryption, your access
point and PC must be setup to agree about that. There are other
important matters as well. I wouldn't have been able to figure all
this out without reading the installation and setup instructions for
all the devices involved. Have you done this?
