Why would Word save as zipped file when sent as an attachment?

I sent my teacher a 2007 Word document posted as an attachment. She cannot
access it, and when I try to open it from the attachment it comes back as a
zipped file that I have to download. Any idea of why this would happen and/or
how to fix it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Amy,

The new Office 2007 app formats are zipped .XML files (saved in a zip package with either .docx or .docm filename extensions.

If you are exchanging files with folks who have older versions of Word, and they do not have (or you're not sure if they have) the
Office 2007 compatability packs for users of prior Office versions you may want to use Office Button=>Save as and save in Word
97-2003 format (.doc) before sending it out.
