How do I save documents as zip files and then re-open?

For some reason our system will not accept Word documents as attachments.
This just started happening about a month ago. The person who is sending the
documents has been doing so for about 5 years. I had to get a new CPU just
about a month ago and am wondering it something happened when the normal
business files were being installed. It was suggested that the documents be
put into a zip file and sent, possibly that would by-pass the problem. I do
not know how to save documents as zip files and then re-open to save on my
system and print. Where would I find instructions on how to do this? Thank
you.
