Why will it dl some stuff and not other stuff?

I'm fiddling with an old XP Home computer on a Dell 4700, and it is
connected by cable to my DSL router, and it is able to dl all the MS
updates since it was last used (5 years ago).

It also downloaded a lot of updates for AVG-free, but now it is at the
end of the AVG7 updates and wants to dl AVG 8.5. However, it can't
make a connection.

So I went to Internet Explorer, and it won't bring up any pages
either, not www.google.com , www.grisoft.com , or one of the MS sites
listes in the Favorites.

When trying to update AVG, it does display a message that does NOT use
the word Firewall. Nonetheless, it the message lists avginet.exe, so
I went to the Firewall and put that program name in the exception
list. No change.

I forgot to check if Internet Explorer is in the Firewall list, but I
assume it is.

What's going on here?`

The MS updates started with 72 items and in the next batch was IE8,
and in the batch after that XP SP3.

What firewall are you using? The generic XP firewall or some third-party
program such as Zone Alarm or Sygate? I hardly think you need both. I would
recommend using only the router and the XP firewall for your daily Internet
use.

I assume you are using Free AVG. This is their download page:

Thanks for replying.

Sorry that I didn't notice your post for several days. So I"m
emailing a copy too.

For other reasons, I ended up starting in Safe Mode with Internet, and
starting the Administrator persona which doesn't show up in normal
mode.

Lo and behold, there I was able to use IE to dl both the new free AVG
and Firefox(4).

Firefox4 didn't work either, but it gave better messages, and said the
proxy wasn't working. In FF I set it to No Proxy (instead of System
Setting) and FF worked. Then I went back to Internet Options and saw
that I had made a mistake (well, I had no guidance) redoing the
options there. The previous owner had dial-up, but had never changed
the defaults for Administrator to dial-up. I have DSL.

I guess the weekly MS updates don't depend on the settings in Internet
Options, and somehow, neither did the updates for AVG Free v.7, but
the built-into AVG update to 8.5 did require the Internet Options to
be set correctly. It's these two things that confused me. I'll try
to remember that these are exceptions to "the rule", it seems.
