contacts and DL issues

Chris

I imported PAB for a user into Contacts in Outlook 2003. Now, I have some
other issues.

1. besides contacts the PAB had some DLs and they were imported into
Contacts. Now, when the the contact got updated with SMTP the contact in the
DL doesn't get updated, even after clicking on "update now".

2. If I delete a contact imported from PAB who is a member of a DL it
doesn't get deleted from DL even after "update now". This also happens to
newly created contact and DL.

3. The contact icons under imported DLs are different than those in Contacts
even for those imported from PAB. When opeing the properties page
respectively the GUI is different. Updating one doesn't update the other.

4. after updating a contact (newly created) I have to run "update now" to
DLs. Since the contact doesn't show which DL it was in so I have to update a
DL everytime I tried to use it. Why it can't get updated for all DLs it is
in?

For all these problems are they supposed to be that way? Or I'm not using
it properly? When using PAB after updated SMTP for a contact I can view it
from the member of a DL. It's automatic.

Thanks.

1. Importing data destroys DL's. Always has.
2. "Update Now" is only a pretend feature. It never works.
3. Known, expected behavior.
4. See 2.

Russ,
thanks for your reply. After some research I realized that true DLs won't
get update automatically. I also learned that a workaround is to use
categories to "create" dynamic distribution list. But how to do that? Here
is what I tried.

1. set each contact with one or more categories. Then view by Categories.
2. to send mail to a DL or Category I clicked on the category, then Action,
send mail to
3. this will add each contacts under the category to the To field. But I
want to have just a single name as the list (for exampel, if the category is
Client List, I'd like to have it added to the To field as Client List). This
way, the recepient will not see each email address. Instead, just the DL or
category name. I know I can cut/paste To field to Bcc. But want to know if
it's possible to have just a list name in the To field.

Thanks.

Only if you create a dummy Contact with the list name and put it in the To:
field.

Russ,
I have another question. In the PAB I imported to Outlook 2003 Contacts
it has several distribution lists. The DLs are imported OK but the contacts
in each DL have different icon and I was able to add the imported contact
into the DL too. That means I have two contacts (same), one is added after
import and one is created during import. The one added will get updated if I
clicked on update now but not the other one. Does the later one has not
connection to the imported contact at all?

Thanks.
