Why not Windows Mail

I am just curious. I see so many posts here that promote email programs
and newsgroups readers other than Windows Mail. I have always used the MS
programs for this. What do people see as the problems with using Windows
Mail?

Windows Mail is a sort of like Outlook Express. I used it for a couple
weeks and it really isnt all that bad. The only frustation I had was the
auto complete of email addresses. I write a lot in my home office and I
had to stop too many times to look up names in the contacts list. After
it looked up a name once, then the autofill would work for that contact
the next time. But too much work.

So I switched to Thunderbird which is faster and the auto fill works
great. It also handles newsgroups very well which I use for text groups.

For my serious Newsgroups where I down load movies or other binary stuff
I use Forte Agent

Simple, it's a piece of sh¡t designed to get you to fork out good money
after bad for Outlook 2007 (another piece of sh¡t). Do yourself a favor
and use Thunderbird or, if you really liked Outhouse Distress, check out
Calypso.

Just like I prefer Firefox to IE 10,000 to 1, I also prefer Thunderbird
to Mail. What we need now is a Mozilla OS, so we can dump Vista, which
hasn't lived up to it's early promises. Vista is the new "Windows Me".
(i think that stands for Mostly Eviscerated)

oh, and I use Sunbird as my calendar app...it's also from Mozilla.
starting to see a trend?

In my opinion, this is more about what functionality you need in your e-mail
client/news reader, than Windows Mail being a "problem". Windows Mail is
lightweight, a baby brother of MS Outlook, and it lacks a lot of the
features you will find in Outlook, Thunderbird, Eudora, Lotus and others.
For the average home users, Windows Mail's features may be all they need.

Also, there is the question of security. Because Microsoft's e-mail clients
are so widespread, they are the prime targets for malware. Some people
prefer to use other software because of this.

My view is that you are looking at this the wrong way entirely. It's
not a matter of problems with Windows Mail.

In almost every program category, E-mail, newsreaders, word
processors, spreadsheets, etc., there are several products on the
market. Each of these products has a different set of features, and
has different strengths and weaknesses. Which one is best for *you*
depends on how you use the product, which features are important to
you, and what your personal preferences are. One doesn't necessarily
have "problems," or isn't necessarily better than another, but it may
be better for *you* than another is.

As a single example of this, if you use your newsreader for binary
newsgroups, you will very likely find that Outlook Express or Windows
Mail are among the poorest choices. If you don't do binary newsgroups,
their lack of capability in that regard is of no importance at all.

Moreover you shouldn't start with the assumption that the Microsoft
product is best, and go to others only if there are "problems" with
it. Instead you should evaluate at least several of them to see which
you prefer.

Particularly when it comes to newsreaders and E-mail programs, much of
what's available is either freeware or shareware coming with a free
trial. I recommend that you try several of the available choices to
see which you like best.

Marv, you got me with that one. I used Outlook Express, and I use Windows
Mail. I never found much of anything that I needed to do with either that I
couldn't accomplish easily and efficiently. I don't recommend anything BUT
OE or WM.

Windows Mail STILL hasn't fixed their non-compliance issues, notice
that newer versions are LESS in compliance? If you use OE or WM
outside of Microsoft newsgroups you'll probably get flamed.

Dunno... I use it without issue. But then I'm not a fanatic when it comes to
ng readers. (Don't use it for email at all... so that could be an issue too.
;-) ) Hmm... but it's one of, if not the only, ng readers that lets one
easily view replies to one's own messages. I like that feature.

I use it without issues for both news and mail from home. I'm not saying the
reports from those who have issues are without merit. I just don't see the
issues here on either of two PC's with Vista installed.

I use Win Mail for newsgroups and it performs very well.

I also have found little to fault with the program although I do use free
mail applications as well.

couldn't accomplish easily and efficiently. I don't recommend anything BUT
OE or WM.

Really. How easily can you do this: Try stopping the usage of the
delimiter on the sig when top posting. A delimiter was NEVER intended
for usage along with top posting, because as you can see by this reply
it blows away all of the prior text.

I don't recommend EITHER of them for newsgroups until that bug is fixed,
which will probably be never.
