Why is my Outlook 2007 so slow?

After importing my pst files from my previous computer, my Outlook 2007 has
been very slow. It starts slow and responds slow. I have to wait for maybe
2 secs. before I get a response.

This has been a problem since the beta release and Microsoft has not
fixed it yet. Hopefully they will attend to it in a service pack but
for now the only solution is to go back to using Outlook 2003.

Is there really nothing I can do because I don't have my old laptop anymore
and the only thing I have in this new one is Office 2007?

Does anyone know if Microsoft is trying to fix this problem? My copy of
Outlook 2003 expired on my new laptop so I do not have access to it. I
purchased Office 2007 and discovered that Outlook 2007 is a dog performance
wise. A very very slow dog.

I called Microsoft and they told me that they have not heard about this
problem before and that I should contact my computer maker (DELL) because my
software was pre-installed. I contacted DELL and they will be getting back
to me on a possible solution. I'm just dreading a re-install because I've
spent an inordinate amount of time trying to transfer folders and files to
this new notebook.

I have read elsewhere that it is a problem between office 2007 and duel core
processors. Why has microsoft not heard of the problem?

I find it difficult to believe that Microsoft is not aware of this problem.
How can I reach Microsoft to tell them of this problem?

BTW, my copy of Office 2007 came directly from Microsoft and I installed it
myself so this is not really a Dell issue.

DELL has gotten back to me with a solution that seemed to work. Following
these steps:

1. Open Outlook as an Administrator by going to C:programs/Microsoft
Office/Office12 and right clicking on the Outlook exe program. Choose "Run
as Administrator".
2. Then once Outlook opens, go to Tools, then Trust Center, then Addins.
3. Click "Go..." at the bottom and uncheck Outlookaddins.
4. To maximize speed, they recommended to uncheck everything EXCEPT Windows
Indexing, which, according to them, is the only useful addin anyway.

When I did this, the speed of my Outlook 2007 improved significantly;
although, we will all have to wait for Microsoft to release the update that
fixes this issue completely.

I hope this helped you.

Thanks for getting back on this. When I try to change to administrator it
asks for a password. When I installed Office I was not asked to establish a
password. I left it blank and it would not let me change to administrator.
Did you get a generic password from Dell?

Thanks,

After looking through all the threads on the subject, these are my results on
my P4, 1.8Ghz, 1GB RAM, Exchange 2003, Outlook 2007 Trial (upgrade from
2003), Office 2003:

1. Addins unchecked - no effect, I had unchecked most already.
2. Renamed those. dat files (except views.dat which I did not have) - no
effect
3. Uninstalled Desktop Seach 3.01 - no effect
4. Compacted .ost file - no effect
5. Deleted all the RSS stuff - no real effect, maybe just wishful thinking
at this point
6. Started Outlook in Safe mode - HUGE effect. But I have no idea what that
means now!!! How can I tell why it ran better? Should I alsway run in Safe
mode? What is different?

I was able to get into the Trust Center and unchecked everything but the
Search add-in. This made a huge difference. It runs much faster now. Thanks
for the help.

Monty,

This worked great. Thank you for sharing your solution. It is running at
par with 2003 now.

Glad it worked for you. Happy to share because this has caused me a great
deal of frustration. Just paying it forward...

Nothing really changed for me. Outlook 2007 doesn't seem to want to
communicate with my POP3 and IMAP and often advises 'switching' the accounts
to either IMAP or POP3; when I switch the accounts the advice is to switch
the accounts to either IMAP or POP3. I've taken to just reading emails on
webmail but to be honest I'm using MIcrosoft Office to try and run a business
and they just aren't performing at all. It's a real shame because I was
really excited about the new suite too!

Monty- I had the same problem. I went in and "unchecked" all the Add-Ins I
could, but there were 3 or 4 that wouldn't let me due to Registry issues,
namely the Business Contact Manager. How do I take care of these?

Leave them and see if there is any improvement on your Outlook 2007's speed.
If it's still slow, please contact your laptop/PC maker. It was DELL that
gave me this solution.

Monty, thank you for your suggestion. I tried doing what you said and found
Outlook.exe.manifest, no plain vanilla "Outlook.exe" file. When I right
click on the file I found, I am not given a "run as administrator" option.
It looks like I am authorized to open as an administrator, but when I "open",
I get a message that there is no program to run the file. Any further
suggestions? Thanks.

I was not able to do what Monty said.
I did fix my problem. It was in my firewall protection.
I had to go in and add all of my outlook accounts and now I am able to
download as befor. I believe that the outlok 2007 reset in my firewall and
this made everything very slow.
Good Luck! Still have not foud out how or where to get the password for
office administrator.
