why does text move back after I have repositioned it

A chapter in my word document wont stay where I put it,I have tried moving it
but it springs back to where it came from! what could be in its way,please!

Could be that you have an image or textbox...so when you try to move
the text it does not fit on the current page? Could be the text is set
to KEEP LINES TOGETHER with other content? Is there a square in the
left margin when you turn on the markers (Ctrl + Shift + 8)?

You need to supply much more specific & accurate detail about what you are
attempting to do, how you are going about it, where the content is and where
you are trying to move the content to - include what version of Word you're
working with.

The only guess I can offer based on your limited description is that you are
trying to use drag & drop to put something where there isn't a viable
location for it to go.

Hello,
Its Windows XP, Word 2002.
A word document with over 400 pages. its actually a book, I have to
re-format it before I can send it to the publisher.
I cut some text from different places in the document and changed font etc
as instructed by the publishers. One particular chapter moved down the page
and when i moved it back up by clicking at the beginning of a line of text
and pressing the backspace key it moves to where i want it but it wont stay
there, it moves back to where it was, How can i check what is "hidden" on
that page that is in the way?

The first thing I would check is the paragraph's formatting. If it's at the
top of a page & you're trying to get it onto the previous page it may be
that, either directly or by way of a Style, it has "Page Break Before"
applied to it as well as "Space Before:". And/Or the preceding para might
also have "Space After:" applied to it.

Click in the para in question & go to Format> Paragraph to see what
attributes are applied on each of the two pages. Alternatively - can't
remember if it's available in 2002 - turn on the Show Formatting Task Pane.
