Why does doing video editing make other apps stop working?

I've found that after doing a lot of rendering using Virtualdub or
Pinnacle Studio - it borks other apps. When I try to open Windows
Media Player - I get the installation screen like it expects me to
install WMP. Outlook Express looks like I've never set it up. Cakewalk
Home Studio says there are no audio drivers installed, Soundforge goes
back to the basic just installed view.

Upon reboot everything goes back to normal. Any idea why this happens?

What did Pinnacle support have to say?

I've never seen that behavior by simply using apps. I have seen this in
cases where you've uninstalled an application. Windows has internal
structure limits. It's possible your use of apps that heavily load the PC
may cause some kind of inability to access data stored about apps you
describe. When rebooted the full system can properly access data as
Registry keys/values and Application data in your profile.

I doubt this is a Windows issue but something with your video/audio
apps. I'd make sure that all of them are fully updated. Also check with
the program's forums and see if others are experiencing issues. This
might also be an interaction issue where the problem only exists in
cases where a certain combination of apps/revisions are used.

Memory Leak, maybe?

Are you using the latest versions of each application you mentioned?

I would ask if you were fully patched - but you answered that with the
telling of what specific operating system you are running.

My suggestion is to do some backups and some cleanup and update everything
to the latest version (Windows XP Home, all your applications, your hardware
drivers, etc.)

This has happened to me when doing a lot of graphic editing. Somehow
the graphic data gets into a part of the computers memory that it
should not be in causing unusual things to happen. If your using an
old version of Pinnacle Studio then you need to upgrade as there were
many bugs with early versions of this program, the newsgroups were
full of people finding bugs in Pinnacle Studio.

While Pinnacle Studio has its issues, this isn't only with PS, it
happens when doing an intense round of processing with VirtualDub,
WinFF as well.
