I'm having a problem I've never encountered before. I find that when I
play video and audio with Windows Media Player various static &
popping begins to show up in the audio - though the video plays okay,
or on audio-only files sometimes even outright failure to do anything.
The progress bar moves but no audio. If I bring up WMP first thing
after a reboot, it appears to behave normally for a while.
Plays .mp3, .wav, DV .avi, .mpg. However, at some point it starts
displaying the symptoms spontaneously. It did it playing through a
playlist of 44.1 16 bit .wav files. Played through about the first 3
or 4 okay, but then the problem developed when it transitioned to a
subsequent track. Never had this problem before in 98, 98SE, XP Home,
XP Media Center. Currently using WMP 11 but it also occurs in the
default version that comes with XP Pro.

I also find that if it's showing up in WMP it also shows up in Kmedia
player and in Pinnacle Studio 9 (video editing app). I don't get these
symptoms playing video with Virtualdub and Vegas Pro8 (video editing
apps) or in Cakewalk and SoundForge (audio editing apps that will also
play video). I don't have to bring up WMP first, it will develop in
Kmedia and Pinnacle as well so it seems there's some common link.

Also don't have any problems playing online video on YouTube etc.

I tried uninstalling WMP and reinstalling, seemed to work at first but
then developed the same issue. Tried a reinstall of Windows, still
have the problem. It used to work fine on this same version of
Windows, with the exact same hardware. Where I first noticed it was
actually on a dedicated player that played DRM .wmv that was
downloaded to play freebie video from PNY that was included as a
premium when buying some memory recently. This required both the
installation of the dedicated player and Silverlight. But a subsequent
reinstallation of Windows hasn't fixed the problem.

Tried reinstalling the Audigy PlatinumEX soundcard, still no change.

Any assistance will be appreciated.

It doesn't seem to be app related so I'd look to the sound card. Maybe
remove and reinstall.

Tried un/reinstalling the sound card.

What I've further discovered is after removing WMP the problem
disappears in the other apps - Pinnacle Studio and Kmedia player.
