Why do I have to type .htm

J

Jane Here

When I want to go to a page on my web site, I have to type .htm on the
address line, otherwise it doesn't find the page.

Some sites allow you to type in an address without the .htm, example:-
www.mysite.com/promo versus: www.mysite.com/promo.htm

Do I have to type the .htm because I built my site in FrontPage? Is there a
way to change the behavior so that it recognizes an address without .htm at
the end as a valid page?

(My host uses Unix, if that matters).

Jane,

When you see /promo.htm, that's the name of a page. When you see /promo,
that means "promo" is the name of a folder, in which a page named index.htm
resides.

A variation on www.mysite.com/promo is www.promo.mysite.com.

You're confusing adding the file extension to a file, with opening a default page in a
folder.

In sites where you can enter www.mysite.com/promo and a page opens, you are actually
opening a default page named index.htm ( or whatever the server default is ) in a folder
named promo

Here's an example
http://www.95isalive.com/fixes

will automatically open:
http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/index.htm

and either link will work the same.

If you have a subfolder called "promo" with an index.htm file in it would
you automattically be able to use the address www.promo.mysite.com as well
or does that have to be configured some other way?

www.promo.mysite.com would be a subdomain, and that's an entirely different
ballgame when it comes to setting it up on the server and dns records.

And you still would have to have a default (home page) document in the root of the subdomain.
