Why do envelopes print in color

Even though I have the color of the document and the envelope addresses set
to automatic/black they print in color.
I'm virtually certain the problem is not with either the printer or the
printer driver.
Does anyone else have this problem and how do I fix it.
Any help at all would be very much appreciated. This is driving me up the
wall!

Some printers evidently use a composite black for envelopes (that is, the
black is produced by the color cartridge rather than the black cartridge).
If some of your ink colors are low, you may not get a true black.
