Printing envelopes - cannot set color to black

Using word 2003- when I try to print envelopes they come out green or red. I
have set the options in font and color for black, automatic and selecting
black. Rarely do I get black print. The black cartridge is new, the color
1/2 full. Any idea why this is happening and how to correct this?

For whatever reason, printers from some manufacturers use a composite black
(made up of the colors in the color cartridge) instead of true black (from
the black cartridge) for envelopes and other smaller documents, so it is
actually the color cartridge that you may need to replace.
