Why did my doc's hyperlinks all turn to bracketed codes?

I made documents that had hyperlinks to various bookmarked areas in the
document, for ease of navigation. Have used them many times in demonstrating
processes to workmates. Now I call up my document and I get things like:
{ HYPERLINK "CO%20-%20Customer%20Order.doc" }
{ HYPERLINK \l "S01" }

I might also add that my control characters such as a smiley face made with
the :) characters also quit working; my feeble guess is that it is related.

I have no recollection of changing any settings, however, my customized
toolbar disappeared around this same period.

Press Alt+F9 to switch between display of field codes (what you
see now) and field results. If that doesn't help, then in Word,
click on Tools | Options | View tab | uncheck the boxes for
"All", "Hidden text", and "Field codes" | Print tab | uncheck the
"Hidden text" and "Field codes" boxes | OK.
