why can't i save as?

My problems began yesterday after an automatic update from microsoft. I
don't know if that was a coincidence or if others are having these problems...

When I try to "save as" in word or excel, the save box comes up but it quits
responding before I can actually choose a folder. If I open a new document
and hit "save" it will allow me to save into my documents, but if I click to
open a folder it will stop responding. It will save previously created
documents.

Also, when I type in a website address and click enter (or click go with the
mouse) nothing happens. But if i scroll through my history on the pull-down
bar it will go to those sites.

Thanks in advance for any help.

BMC has posted this information about similar problems in the last couple of
days and it seems to help. The update he refers to is on my computer and
doesn't seem to be causing problems. I would recommend trying his solution
to see if it helps and be ready to reinstall if it doesn't. Note, this is
about a fix to Windows, not to Word.

It's a bug in this Hotfix which fixes a bug in Explorer which Automatic
Updates will have installed:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/ms06-015.mspx

You can remove it from Add/Remove Programs, where it shows as "Security
Update for Windows XP (KB908531)". Make sure the "show updates" box at the
top is ticked or you won't see hotfixes in the list.

Or wait until Microsoft push out an update.
