Why can't I open "My Network Places" directory?

I've got two machines, each running Win'XP Home.

When I first booted them up today I opened a folder and clicked: "My Network
Places>Entire Network>Microsoft Windows Network>Mshome", on one of the
computers. This displayed the two computer names. It did not, however,
allow clicking the remote computer name without an error message. I then
removed the folder and reopened it. I could not repeat clicking of "Mshome"
because the folder "My Network Places" would not open.

Many reboots later and nothing has changed. Cannot open "My Network Places"
folder on either machine. Windows XP and Antivirus firewalls are turned off
on both machines.

Two additional comments: 1) I have run "Network Setup Wizard" several times
on both machines. 2) Cannot seem to add folders to the list of shared
folders. Cannot add a hand to the folder image.

And the text of the error message is.... ? That could be a large clue as
to the problem.

The error message was:

"Mahomet is not available. You might not have permission to use this
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions. The list of Workgroups for this server is not currently
available."

Note that "Mshomet" is misspelled. This is how it was displayed. It should
be "Mshome". If I recall correctly (I'm not sure if I remember correctly)
some time in the past (I don't know how many days ago) I was able to access
the folder. How do I find out if I have permissions? How do I change
permissioins?
