My Network Places

I've got two systems both running "Win'XP Home". On one of them I click "My
Network Places>Entire Network>Microsoft Windows Network>Mshome" and it
contains a directory labeled with the name of my machine. I open this
directory and it contains the names of all the shared directories on the
machine. On the other machine clicking the directory yields an error
message that says:

"Mahomet is not available. You might not have permission to use this
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions. The list of Workgroups for this server is not currently
available."

Can anyone help?

Is the Browser service running on the machine? Open a Command Prompt
and issue:

net start browser

Opening the command prompt window and typing "net start browser" yields the
message "The requested service has already been started". What do I do now?

Look in the Event Log for errors. Look here for possible answers,
specifically look for "How do I know I have a browser problem"

http://www.chicagotech.net/browser.htm

If there is a Browser war on your small network remove the Master
Browser duty from one of the machines. You will know if you are having
a Browser war (Browser Elections) by looking at the recorded events in
the Event Log.

I first create an error by clicking: "My Network Places>Entire
Network>Microsoft Windows Network>Mshome" I then goto the event viewer and
open all four viewers: Application, Security, System and Internet explorer.
I don't find any entries with a time equal to the time that the error was
made. Double clicking on the latest event shows it to be an unrelated
event.

I'm not sure I know how best to use the event viewer. Can you make any
suggestions?

It would be in the System log and they would probably be event ID's 8021
and or 8032, but any event recorded there may point to the problem.
These errors would be logged almost as soon as the computer was booted
and began broadcasting its presence on the network, it wouldn't happen
just as or when you try to browse.

How are the computers connected together? Did you manually assign IP
addresses or is IP addressing done by a router/DHCP? Did you run the
Network Setup Wizard on the machines? For troubleshooting purposes
temporarily disable the firewalls to make sure that they aren't causing
problems. Did you share something on the machine, is there actually
anything to share or for the problem machine to access? Did you make
sure that the necessary permissions are in place for proper access?

They are connected through a router. No, I did not manually assign IP
addresses. Yes, I ran the Network Setup Wizard on both machines. Yes, I've
shared folders on both machines.

how do I manually assign IP addresses? How do I make sure the necessary
permissions are in place?

If you have a firewall enabled, disable it and try again.
