WHY??? Can't I hear sound through my headphones ?

Melanie

I like to talk to friends on line using my microphone
but, have never had sound come through the headphones. I
use a head set. I have bought three sets. Yet no sound
emits through the headphone speakers. When using the
microphone with the computer speakers I hear feedback and
echoing BIG TIME and it is very annoying for both speaker
and listener.I was told to use headphones and turn
speakers off and I would no longer have that dang
feedback but, I can't get sound to come through my
headphones.Anyone ??? I am desperate to fix this problem!

Hi Melanie,

Where are you plugging the headphones in? Many sound cards only have Line
Out jacks, not Headphone/Speaker jacks. Line Out does not provide enough
drive to power the headset speakers.

If your computer does have Speaker/Headphone jacks, you may need to open the
case and make sure the jacks are cabled correctly, especially if they're
front mounted on the case.

In addition to Kelly's excellent advice, check your settings in Control
Panel. My son's computer has onboard sound and in order to use his
headset to talk to friends during games, he has to do 2 things: 1) His
headset has 2 connectors - one for the mike and one for the speakers.
Because his "sound card" has only the 3 connectors, he has to take out
the speakers connector and put in the one for his headset. 2) And this
is the part that might really apply to you more - he has to go into his
speaker configuration applet and *change* the setup from speakers to
headset. He does this in the Multimedia applet in Control Panel. His
computer runs Win98, so yours might be slightly different (and the XP
box isn't on right now so I can't check), but you *do* have a place to
configure your speakers from a Control Panel applet.

Thanks Kelly for your reply. I have a audio line in
connector and a microphone connector. They plug in the
back of the computer. It is a real mystery.

Kelly,
You gave me an idea and it worked! I took the speaker
plug out (of the line out stereo connector port) and
plugged the headphone part of the headset into the line
out connector port where the speakers connect and I GOT
SOUND THROUGH THE HEAD PHONES LOL! WOW I am so happy. If,
it were not for you Kelly I would not have thought of
that. You see I never thought of putting the headphones
into the computer speaker port because it is not right
next to the microphone port. And the port next to the
microphone did not play speakers or head setLike you say
could be a cable mix up or something. THANKS AGAIN Kelly.
