Why Can't Access Dir When Shared?

J

John Ciccone

It's been fine for years. Suddenly, I cannot access the C:\windows directory
from another computer.

I've gone through sharing setup in both regular and safe mode;

The directory icon in Windows Explorer is the one with the 'hand'

IN the Sharing properties of that directory, everything is ghosted. But you
can see that "Share this folder on the network" is checked and has a Share
Name and "Allow network users to change my files" is checked.

The windows directory is on a Win XP Pro SP2 machine.

Trying to access from a Win XP Home Edition machine.

Connected through the same Linksys router for the past four years.

Make sure that "simple file sharing" is disabled on the XP Pro SP2
machine:

1. Open My Computer.

2. Click Tools > Folder Options > View.

3. Scroll to the end of the list of advanced settings and un-check
"Use simple file sharing".

Then, un-share and re-share the desired folder(s).

Afraid it doesn't work. Simple File Sharing was checked, now it's unchecked.

I then un-shared and re-shared a few times.

I have "Everyone" as a user which has all three Permissions checked for all
shared directories and the root C: drive.

I've rebooted both machines.

Another weird thing is that I can map the C: drive... but I'm suddenly no
longer asked for a password to do so.

However, I try logging on to a third machine, I AM asked for a password, and
have NO trouble accessing the C:\windows directory.

PS: does it matter that "Everyone" is the only user available? (I seem to
remember "All" being available too).

You're welcome.

The "Everyone" group includes all users who have accounts on the XP
Pro computer. Create a matching user account on all computers, with
the same user name and password on all of them.

Also check the NTFS file permissions on the shared folders.

I'll try that tomorrow and will also try not to write when under the
influence of this much frustration. Systems seem to be giving us a lot of
that this year.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Things seem to have gotten worse: I cannot open Word files in Word if they
are saved with "Read Only Recommended" attribute checked, and I try to open
as Read Only. I get error re: "Word cannot open the document". But it opens
if I do not try to open in Read Only mode.

Does anyone know why the Share Name of the troublesome directories keep
'defaulting' back to "ADMIN$" ? I try to set it to "Windows" for example.

I *think* I've created a matching user account on all computers, with the
same user name and password on all of them to no avail.

I'm afraid I don't know where the NTFS file permissions settings on the
shared folders are.

Any guidance from anyone would be greatly appreciated.
