Whwn to run rules in Outlook

Hi there

My outlook 2007 is set up so that all incomming messages will not be marked
as Read before I actuallu opens them and read them.
I have made some rules that moves messages from inbox to variuos sub-folders
dependent on the sendername. So far so good. The challenge is that theese
rules, are running as soon as the messages hit the inbox, in other words, the
messages are being moved before i read them. Is it possible to do a setting
that say that the ruls sholud not run before the messages are marked as
"read" ???

Looking forward to an quick ansver.

No, since the rules only run on receipt or transmission of a message not on
message read.

No, you would need to run the rules yourself after all messages are read. Or
get a utility like Auto-Mate which can move messages later, based on
conditions.
See http://www.slipstick.com/addins/auto.asp for links. There is at least
one other tool that works like Auto-Mate. I haven't tried the other tool,
I've used Auto-Mate for years.

Rules run automatically when new items are delivered to the Inbox, or
when they exit the Outbox.

Think about it. You can mark a message as read or unread. You can do
that any number of times. Do you really want your rules to execute when
you change the read/unread status of a message? You think you do but
the next post we'll see from you is how to run the rules on only the
first such transition and no later transitions.

If you don't want your rules to run automatically then you'll have to
run them manually after committing whatever actions you want to perform
before those rules are executed.

So why not create a rule that saves a copy of every message into a
folder (and runs either before all your other rules if want a copy of
every mail to get captured into this other folder or runs as a catch-all
rule at the end after a mail survives the gauntlet of your rules)? I
use a catch-all rule to move a copy of all incoming mails to a folder
named "Received Items" (which is under the Sent Items folder) if and
only if it survives the gauntlet of my anti-spam and bad mail rules.
That way, I can delete items in the Inbox folder without having to drag
them to some holding folder to review them later. By being under the
Sent Items folder, I can do a search on the Sent Items folder, include
subfolders, group the results, and see all items threaded together on
the same topic.

If you don't want your rules to move an item out of the Inbox folder
when they fire then you need to change them to copy the item. You could
go investigate SperrySoftware's Incoming Mail Organizer or Pergenex's
Auto-Mate add-ins.
