Which version necessary to open .xls file?

I have Microsoft Excel 4, and use Windows 2000. I was just sent an .xls file that
requires a newer version of Excel. How can I tell which version is necessary...I don't
want the latest, largest, glitsiest, buggiest version. I just want to use the minimum
version required. The Excel 4 I have does work with .xls files, at least it shows that
capabilities, so there must be more than one kind. It tries to open this .xls file but
gives me the error message that a newer version is required.

Can someone point me in the right direction. I can open this .xls file as text but
there is a lot of unreadable material in it, along with some readable text.

Thanks, John

If you just want to view or print the Excel file you can Download and install
the Excel Viewer from....

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...f4-996c-4569-b547-75edbd03aaf0&displaylang=en

If you need to edit the file and make changes..........

Excel 97(version 8) should be all you need to open and work with Version 5.0
and newer *.xls files.

Not too many copies still kicking around but you might find something on EBay.

Check out Ebay for a deal on Office 97 or 2000. If you go this route, make
sure there is a licence for the product.

For info on ordering newer versions(10 and 11)see this website.

http://www.microsoft.com/office/programs/default.asp to see the Office
products and how to purchase.

Note:you probably don't need XL2003 so browse to the "previous versions"
section.

Also, if you get xl97 be sure to get the sr2 version and again, get a LEGAL
copy.
