How to reset .xls file association.

Robert Ramin

I'm running XP with Office 2007, and I had to delete and manually recreate
the .xls file association. The problem I have now is that when I download
an .xls file from a website I no long get the option to Open the file
directly. I have to Save As, then open the file from there.

Does anyone know how I can either reset the .xls association, or enable the
Open option when downloading an .xls file from IE.

Thanks,
rboert

Hi rboert,
to reset the .xls association: Windows/File Explorer you can specify
for each file type the app to open with; since I use for ages FireFox
I can't help you with your second question.

Thanks for the reply. I resolved the issue by copying the .xls registry
setting from a working PC to the affected one. Works good now.

Thanks,

You can do this by starting Excel from the Run dialog box on the
Windows Start menu using the /regserver switch. Open the Run dialog,
then enter

Excel.exe /regserver

and click OK. This causes Excel to set itself back to "factory
defaults". You may need to include the entire path to Excel:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\Excel.exe" /regserver

Of course, change the path to the correct value on your machine.
