Where to put missing dll besides System32

After running Norton WinDoctor, I got the following message twice: "C:
\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe" cannot access a necessary
file, "msvcr80.dll." I downloaded msvcr80.dll and moved it to C:
\WINDOWS\system32.

I ran Norton again but this time only one message of an "C:\Program
Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe" came up.

Obviously the program Windows Defender is still looking for
"msvcr80.dll," but where is it looking for it? By that I mean, where
else (besides C:\WINDOWS\system32) should I put a copy of
"msvcr80.dll" so Windows Defender can find it?

Try registering the file

START
RUN
Type 'regsvr32 msvcr80.dll' (without quotes) & click OK

If you get a dialog saying that the file is registered then you should be in
business

If you get an entry point not found or failed to load then the file doesn't
need registering

The file you are talking about is a Visual C++ 2005 runtime file

I hope this helps,

Why did you do that. Did you encounter any problems while running the
"Windows Defender"? Or do you believe in all messages generated by
Norton/Symantec crapware?
Obviously the program Windows Defender is still looking for
"msvcr80.dll,"

Nope. If there are no problems while running the Windows Defender, it
has found that file in %windir%\WinSxS\... anyway.
but where is it looking for it?

The "Windows Defender" is smarter than this "WinDoctor" and this should
be a good reason to uninstall all Norton/Symantec crapware ASAP.

$%^$%^ Norton. See this.

msvcr80.dll does NOT belong in C:\WINDOWS\system32. See this.

Norton WinDoctor errors about msvcr80.dll

msvcr80.dll belongs here...
C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.42_x-ww_0de06acd
and is probably already there.

$%^$%^ Norton.

IMO, get rid of Norton System Works.
