Where is 'up' button on Vista?

I can't find the little yellow 'up' one file button on Vista Explorer. On
XP, it's just right of the back & forward buttons. Surely, they wouldn't
eliminate it on Vista. Did they move it or do I need to do something to
enable it?

It is there, improved, and in a different form.

You just click on the second to last location in the address bar (breadcrumb
navigation).

Nope .. use the breadcrumb bar:

Notice at the top the word (file name actually) "eclipse" is highlighted.
The bar is responsive to user input and you can travel up and down the
folder heirarchy just by clicking the name in the breadcrumb bar. Also, when
hovering the bar, a dropdown list activates which you can use if you'd like.
Once you get used to it, IMHO, it really makes working with files and
folders much easier.

I missed that 'one folder up' button at first, but then I got used to the
breadcrumb bar which is better.

yeah this is one of the most non intuative features in Vista..

no one will find it by their own... and what a stupid name..
"bread crumb"...

Its ok after you find out how it works.. Im not saying its not..

but most users will not find it on their own.. especialy the newbies and
novices

It's the best advancement in the GUI. Shame the toolbar/taskpane and
details view column problems more than countered that improvement though.

It's a term that has been used in web design for years:

No point complaining, Vista is cleverly designed to drive everybody -
newbies *and oldies* - MAD!

especialy the newbies and
novices

do you actually think "I" didnt know that????

99.9% dont and they will not find this feature if someone doesnt tell them..

but what is sure.. is that THEY WILL be looking for a darn UP button
that MS removed and made the toolbars.. guess what?

NON CONFIGURABLE..

I would like to get my hands on the DORK who thought about doing that @ MS

Stop moaning about this. It's pretty intuitive to all but the densest
people and not all changes are bad, as in this case.

I suspect that the toolbars are actually configurable, as some apps seem to
add their own buttons. There is no user interface though and I think it
must all reside in the registry.

Maybe some clever programmer will make an interface to make your own buttons
some time.

I think the breadcumb idea is not so intiutive for the new user, and is
counterintuitive to the experienced XP or earlier user.

And what about the situation where the name of the current folder is so long
that no breadcrumbs above it are visible in the address bar? There's no
going up available.

Maybe the up button will return someday. Please???

ah, newbies and novices should buy a book on Vista if they can't find
their way around. Even I bought a book on XP, as I wanted to get as
familiar with it as I was with 98. That's what books are
for--learning. amazing, huh!

you are pissing and moaning about the wrong feature. save your breath
for complaining about a real issue like Vista's awful search feature,
for example.

DUH! why SHOULD it return? It would be totally redundant! get over it!

Greetings from old Europe :
Yes, it has disappeared and nobody knows why, not even MS developpers, I
guess.
But you can bypass this stupid (?) mistake by using the conjonction of "Alt
+ uparrow"
Better than nothing, and cross your finger until Vista SP15 comes up...
JL

Amen to that, Thai. And thanks SS and Saucy for the hints on this
"Breadcrumb Bar" (g) ... I missed the tutorial ... it aggravated me to no
end when I first got Vista ... now that I understand a little of what you
are talking about, I will try it. I _have_ done a mouse over on previous
folder names up in that new bar but nothing ever happened. Guess I didn't
wait long enough ... vanilla

Hi, SS ... as one of the densest, I am still glad that you guys were talking
about this in here ... I have had Vista loaded since January 29 and I have
never seen any tutorial, help file, or newsgroup posting that mentioned that
there be anything called a "Breadcrumb Bar". Nor did I ever find anything
that would explain the new design. Fortunately, for densests like me, I
finally saw the folders thing at the bottom of the left pane and shouted
'hallelujah!', as I could once again find my way around ... go ahead and
laugh, it's OK ... but you are so far up into the knowledge that you have
that maybe you have forgotten what it is like to be a "freshman" ... (g) ...
Thai has the right of it, I am afraid ... vanilla

LOL! You've got that right! I _still_ haven't figured out how to get Search
to find what I need ... that is the ONE thing I miss the most from XP (that
and the good old Image and Fax Viewer).

I have been using the little search tool right above The Orb ... but I hear
that this coming patch Tuesday is going to do something horrible to it ... I
just looked for the source of where I heard that but can't find it ... it
was a list of the patches that are coming, either this Tuesday or with SP1
when it is released ... anyway, it had something to do with the little
Search box right above The Orb.

Please point me to a flash demo or some kind of Help file that explains how
to use the new Search in Vista in the manner in which the designers intend
for us all to do our Searches. I rarely even try to use it. I just
painstakingly drill down in the nests ...

Thanks ... vanilla

merci, jean ... I will try that next time to see if it will work the same
over here ... vanilla

It's the best advancement in the GUI. Shame the toolbar/taskpane and

If you could actually do something with the breadcrumb, it would be
most amazing. I would love to be able to right-click on a folder in
the breadcrumb and get a context menu. But otherwise (and for me at
least) the breadcrumb is mostly useless and an inconvenience as I have
to use extra clicks to get to the non-button version that I can copy/
paste

Brilliant name. Read some fairy tales.. small kids being led through
the forest drop a trail of bread crumbs to they can find their way
back.

No extra clicks required, if you want to copy, just right click and
choose "copy"

To paste, right click on any of the whitespace and click paste.

Since under XP you'd still need to select the field with a left or right
click first, there is no loss of efficiency here.

Conversely, if you want to jump up three or four levels, you can do so
faster now. Even better if you want to go up a couple levels and then
down into another subfolder, which you can now do from the address bar
with a mouse.
