Vista or not Vista

M

MarcusB

I wonder if we really will gain something installing Vista at our
department? Besides new firewall I do not see any other advantages.
On all our XP machines people still configure desktops so it looks like
Windows 2000, remove all menu animations etc.
Most of users also blocked installing Explorer 7.0. They do not like
that stop button is on the other side.
They do not use media etc.
Please give me the good reason to move to vista. I need this to convince
our management.

Marcus

Currently I would not suggest using Vista in a business environment, wait a
while. If XP is working fine, use it.

The Vista Firewall will cause all sorts of problems on a business network as
do other things in Vista. Your tech support staff will be working long hard
hours if you upgrade to Vista.

DO NOT INSTALL VISTA!!!!!!!!

If you try to convince them you will lose your job and they might want to
kill you for giving them such horrid advice!

Really there is no advantage... keep XP as long as you can.

Find other ways to streamline productivity.

Thank you Allen,
It is what we do today. We downgrade all computers from Vista. Already
more than 300 computer was downgraded which was at the beginning with
preinstalled Vista.
But how long Microsoft will support with updates Windows XP?
If at the end we will need to move to Vista is it not better to start
today? I am really confused.
I am alone responsible for more than 500 clients in our department.
I was thinking that using new Vista firewall will help our business.
Today all people are using different firewalls (Kerio, Sygate, Symantec)
and there is big chaos and connectivity problems. We can not use many
tools because of firewalls blocking port. Is it not better to have Vista
firewall instead?

MS is still supporting windows 2000! XP support will probably last until
windows 7 comes out...
I hope this will be better than the horrible vista, and THEN you can switch.

The vista firewall is not so much better, it only adds a way to block
outgoing stuff (that is turned off by default) and it also has a limited
kind of interface... NO BIG DEAL!

Just make sure your computers dont have viruses and you will never need to
care about outgoing rules.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. DO NOT.. I repeat, DO NOT install Vista!

I post vista related stuff... whats your problem???

There is no requirement to like vista in order to post in this newsgroup.

are you willing to take responsibility if he installs Vista and everything
falls apart in that company?

I am giving him the best advice that ANY good IT person would give.

almost no one is installing vista in companies... there is a reason for
this!

D

What planet are you on ????

So your telling me hardly any companies in the world are installing vista,
what a load of bs.

Obviously Marcus will require to do preperation and research before rolling
it out, when he feels comfortable doing it,
Vista is fine, providing it is installed on a compatable platform and the
correct research is done before.

I know many companies who have hardware with Vista installed and are running
without a glitch because they
did there homework first, this is miles away from you running to the local
pc store grabbing a copy of vista
from the shelves and installing it to the first pc you can grab your hands
on, then obviously had one or two issues and you now spend your days
slagging it off, pathetic. If you used your resources to find solutions to
the problems instead of crying like a spoilt kid you may venture further.

Hi Marcus,

If the current systems suit your needs and are in good repair, there is no
need for replacement. Even if you were to need to replace a system, your new
one would have to be compatible with the current network setup and
applications. Perhaps the only compelling arguement for upgrading would be
support, but for now XP will be supported for quite some time.

There is nothing wrong with staying with Windows XP if your department is
happy with it.

For security reasons though, I would certainly suggest you switch to using
Internet Explorer version 7. There is just no good reason NOT to do this.
People quickly get use to the minor differences and there are enhancements
that will never be available for IE6 - such as tabbed browsing. I could not
go back to browsing without tabs! (-:

I am saving them from many problems.

Using an OS too soon in a company may create problems.

How many people have had problems with vista??? if you do not see this, you
are blind, sorry.

If you care about the person then you advise them the best way...

but in order to do that you must have a flexible mind...

not one that insist on putting vista everywhere!

Vista is not ready yet, there is no SP1 even yet....

its better to wait to see what will happen with SP1 at least..

then decide.

The best way to decide if your company needs Vista is to select a machine,
maybe even buy a machine, set it up with Vista, and then see how it works in
the various environments within your company. You then present your findings
to management.

Please give me the good reason to move to vista. I need this to convince
our management.

Although I'm a very satisfied Vista user, I don't think there's a strong
case for corporates to migrate to it. The additional security benefits of
Vista are less important in a typical corporate environment, where the IT
Department will (should) have well-managed firewalls, email grooming, web
site black listing, anti-virus and anti-malware solutions already in place.

In a corporate environment, the desktop computer is just a tool to do a job,
and needn't be flashy or fancy, or have the latest eye candy. XP SP2 is
very well sorted and stable, supports a vast range of applications, and when
surrounded by the usual corporate security infrastructure, is perfectly
secure enough, too.

For home users the situation is different. In the absence of
corporate-style security management, the additional security of Vista is a
real benefit, and for many home users the computer is more than just a
tool - sometimes it's a hobby in itself, and for most people their PC is a
"personal" thing, where stylish looks and so on are more valued.

I won't slag off Vista, because in my experience it's been just great.
Stable, stylish, good to use. But the case for rolling it out across a
corporate is quite weak.

Incidentally, you will see that there a one or two very noisy children
amongst us. Please don't let them put you off, and in particular please
don't give their opinions more weight than you would those of any other
spotty thirteen-year-old.

When I was their age I thought I knew everything; had black-and-white views
on every topic and shouted my opinions at the top of my voice. Now I look
back with embarrassment, as our "own" children here surely will.

Hi and thanks,
The most annoying part in Explorer 7.00 for our staff is stop button
which is placed on the wrong side and there is no possibility to move
it. It should be on the same side as forward and back button.
Security yes.
Tabbed browsing? We do not have use of it. You can just open a new window.
Better printing. This is good.

More than 250 machines lattely bought came with vista, but we just
downgraded it to XP and some to Windows 2000.

What I'd suggest doing is trialing Windows Vista on a few machines, ask for
volunteers :) for a few weeks see how they get on with using it.

Depending on how the machines or used they may or may not benefit from
anything major, if they work with a lot of files, then search and
organisation would be improved but if most things are done in the browser
you won't gain a lot from this, the new fonts and ClearType being on by
default is a lot easier on the eyes, as is the Aero interface. There's some
new administrative features. There's security, but I already assume your
clients are locked down.

Bottom line is, like other people have said, if your current system works
than it works. Any gains in productivity can only really be measured by
trialing the system out as it depends heavily on what they're doing on the
machines.

But like Richard said IE7 should be rolled out ASAP, for security reasons
alone. Not to mention its just a better browser.
