Vista or not Vista

I should also add that we still have more than 100 machines running
Windows 2000 and users even do not think go to XP.
Therefore for Vista I need really good arguments. The only one I have so
far is support in the future.
Some years ago when we moved from Windows NT clients, there was argument
and it was USB support in Windows 2000. Such arguments works.
Explorer is not big argument because many of our staff use Firefox and
for mail they use Thunderbird. The same I am using thunderbird for the
news group. It is nice to have mail and news client in one and
Thunderboird allow me to have inbox with more than 40000 mails without
any problem. I never was lucki with Outlook or Outlook express with big
inboxes (it took ages to open mail)

Hi Paul,
Actually ClearType is not working for most of us the text is blurred
after we use ClearType in Windows Xp. And there was funny situation with
it. One staff member bought new screen and at the same time he uppdated
his computer and the settings in Explorer was changed to ClearType. He
did not know about it.
He phoned for replacement of the screen because the text was blurred.
When he got new screen there was not difference. Than he mailed me for
help. I just came and removed ClearType settings and the text was not
blurred anylonger.

I am not sure the exact XP support timeline, I do know they are working on
XP Service Pack 3, which is a good indication that XP will be supported for
a year or two at the very least.

In a business environment, I would hold off for about a year from
introduction unless there was a know business reason for changing. By then
most of the bugs will have been worked out.

Sorry Tie, but I made that post because the point of this NG is to help
people that are experiencing problems? How is telling people to stick to
XP helping them?

Why don't you ask the other posters that offered the same advice.

Take a look Even Windows 2000 have extended support to 2010.

/Marcus

The Windows 2000 product family enters the Extended Support phase, which
continues for at least 5 years through June 2010.

• Microsoft offers a minimum of 10 years' support (5 years Mainstream
plus 5 years Extended) for business and developer products. The
Microsoft support life-cycle policy provides predictable coverage of
Microsoft products and continues to set the standard for product support
policies industry-wide.

• Microsoft is not ending support for Windows 2000. During the Extended
Support phase, Microsoft continues to provide security hot fixes and
paid support but no longer provides complimentary support options,
design change requests, and non-security hotfixes.*

I wonder if we really will gain something installing Vista at our
department? Besides new firewall I do not see any other advantages.
On all our XP machines people still configure desktops so it looks
like Windows 2000, remove all menu animations etc.
Most of users also blocked installing Explorer 7.0. They do not like
that stop button is on the other side.
They do not use media etc.
Please give me the good reason to move to vista. I need this to
convince our management.

You should go on record as recommending Vista.

If the company does not adopt Vista and something really ghastly happens,
you can blame the existing helter-skelter security imposed by ancient
operating systems.

If, on the other hand, you do implement Vista and something goes amiss, you
can blame Microsoft.

In the olden days it used to be said: "Nobody ever got fired for using IBM."

Today, replace IBM with MS.

There is no requirement to like vista in order to post in this newsgroup.

You ignorant POS!
STFU and get lost.

Why? It sounds to me like an exercise if futility and frustration. If
everyone is happy and you see no advantages, I'd leave well enough alone -
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Hi Frank,
I think that Varius has right. In 2005 we still had some machines with
Windows NT and people did only need USB support. Thus it is good to wait
for newer version of Windows 7. With Vista can we have to many problems.
Some people have a lot of software 15 years old and it will probably not
work on Vista.
Personally I do not like Vista interface. But the same was with XP.
First thing what we done with XP, we just change to standard start
meny, removed themes etc.. It is stuff you do not need.
At our deartment people use menus and try to use mouse as little as
possible. Therefore icons and ribbons are not welcome so much. They are
used to use Keyboard shurtcuts etc....
But I am confused . I still do not want be behind and use new OS but at
the same time I do not want to have so much problems

All operating systems require updates, not just Windows.

Technology changes.
What may be inconceivable as a venerability today, may be a major
issue tomorrow.

Given time and resources, since no code is perfect, issues will be
found by those searching.

when you are confused you wait until things clear up.

My personal belief is that Vista has a rocky road ahead of it.

Lots of companies are waiting to see what will happen.

Only time will show... so WAIT and keep using XP for the time being.

It seems that you have "really" made up your mind - so why ask and rebut.

You asked a broad question in such a way that you obviously don't have
hands-on experience on it and haven't read reviews and documentations about
its pros and cons but with a strong will to use it not only for personal
stuffs but also for the entire business environment that otherwise is
functional and stable.

If you want to show performance,
Today all people are using different firewalls (Kerio, Sygate, Symantec)

Why not propose to consolidate into one or two standard AVs for client side
so that the company would get a better pricing, support from the vendor, and
consolidated internal support knowledgebase?

Why not update the old and maybe outdated 15-year application(s) first so it
may help employees do job easier and better?

Why do you think management has decided to downgrade hundreds of
new systems not using Vista? Are they all MS haters, or perhaps, they have
done some homework and know it is not the time for doing this?

OS is just a platform to support applications and tools that people use for
pleasure and work. If it comes with the system (be Linux, Windows, etc.)
without any problems with existing applications and hardware, one MAY
consider it. Otherwise, why would anyone want to change everything because
of a new OS? Of course, this only applies to business, and for personal
stuffs, it's just a matter of preference.

Next time, you can try an even easier way. Just call the vendor's sales and
they would be happy to come up some selling points for you. That is the
least thing a person like you could and should do.
