Windows Vista Explorer has a unsorted option???

In details view of files, you can drag a file up or down the list, and
explorer deselects sorts and you get an unsorted list.

This feature is very annoying, as right button dragging to a folder and
selecting move will also deselect sorts as well. This is something I do all
day long, and I have to click the name header to re-activate sorts after
every file I move or copy.

Why does explorer have this unsorted ability?

Can it be disabled and act like XP?

This one bug is making the use of Vista a pain in the butt, and the only
reason I'm using Vista is the Dell machine I have can't get Gigabit speed any
network addapter when this machine runs XP. We tried 3 different brands of
Gigabit networks cards, and they only get 100Mb speed on a Gigabit network,

It's sad that no one has responded to this question. Some one some where
knows the answer but doesn't want to help...

I personally think this is a bug and not a feature.

The first question I would ask you is WHY are you dragging files as
you explained to upset the selected sort order? Don't do that and the
problem goes away. I move thousands of files daily and don't have any
problem keeping folders sorted as they should be.
I personally think this is a bug and not a feature.

My guess is once you select a file to drag it, you've freed it from
any restrains so you can drag it anywhere... to some new folder or
elsewhere within the folder it already is. No, not a feature, but not
a bug either, I would think a necessary compromise.

Well, it would sure be nice to be able to control this "feature".

When ever I drag a file to a folder, no matter where I drop the file,
it changes to unsorted. So I'm constantly having to click the header to
change the sort back to what it was before I dropped the file.

Now repeat this 200 to 400 plus times a day, and you can see why I don't think
this is a feature.

Why can't the sort be locked?

Why is this so different from XP?

This is the first OS I've ever seen where there is an unsorted option
available for files being displayed in a list in a file browser.

You can even do this in open and save dialogs.

Why?

Actually, I'd onsider it a feature and not a bug. Why, you ask?

Because if you drag files around an explorer view (of into a view from
another folder), it implies that you want to customize the arrangement
of the view because you will be inserting files where you droppped them
onto the list.

I find this to be extremely helpful, because I download a lot of
photography on a daily basis. Before I start my downloads, I open the
folder where I want to save the picture and "turn off" sorting by
changing the position of the last item in the list. Then, when I
drag-and-drop a picture from Internet Explorer, it appears where I want
it - at the end of the list where I dropped it. This makes it easier to
see which ones I've already downloaded.

Once I am done, I can easily select the last items in the list, and
apply the appropriate tags to the new files. When that is done, I
re-initiate sorting.

It works slightly differently in XP, but the principle remains the
same. The difference in XP is you could move the icons to just about any
arrangement you wanted, and this created problems for many users.

In Vista, when you re-arrange files in a view, Explorer will keep all
the files in a single consecutive area at the top of the view to prevent
a file icon from being hidden out of view. This happens whether you in
Details, Tiles or any other view style of Explorer.
