Where is all my speed?

I have a question about my download speed on the internet. I have a
128K internet connection. When I download a large file like a podcast
it takes a long time. The speed at which the download happens is very
much slower. Like 10K per second or less. Now I do realize that there
are may factors that can slow down my download, like speed of the
server I am downloading from and the congestion of the internet itself.
My question is if I were to upgrade to a faster internet speed like
256K will I see a speed increase in my download? If so why? Don't I
have 128K pipe? How could my internet speed be a limiting factor until
I hit close to 128K per second?

Thanks.

128K of what? Is it bits or bytes? (More likely bits per second).
10K of what? Is it bits or bytes? (More likely bytes per second)

In addition, 128K of whatever is hard to achieve because there is
significant system overhead. Not only that, the vendors quote quite
optimistic values.

How would I find out if it's bits or bytes per second? It's listed as
128Kbps.
