Where does Outlook Address Book Hide

I am running a new Sony Vaio laptop with Vista Home Premium installed (no SP1
offered to me as yet). My question is not one for the Outlook newsgroup (I
reckon) but simply as to the path in Windows Vista leading to the Outlook
Address Book. I ask because it was my custom to back up Outlook Express daily
on to an external hard drive by drag and drop. I would transfer to related
address book in a similar manner. Having upgraded to Outlook, I am able to
back up that folder daily in a similar manner.

But when I find the new address book, in .csv format, it does not relate
directly to the new address book that I have edited in Outlook format.

My question is, put simply, is there a proper address book lurking away in
the background that is invisible to me?

If anyone knows where it is and the path leading to it I would be most
grateful to hear from you.

Outlook uses contacts, not a separate address book, it's part of the PST
file Outlook uses.

You can have web based Contacts lists from your Hotmail accounts as well,
using the Outlook Connector. It's just the same, but it's a separate
Contacts list that can be selected.

Michael, thank you so much for the information. This means I only have to
back up the Outlook Folder on its own to protect all the files. I thought
that might be the case, but the technology is a bit beyond me.

I would also like to thank the other person writing as Synapse Syndrome. All
information is useful and I am already aware of the connector to Hotmail
files.

Well, you can do it that way, but it's easier just to just use the export option in your address book. Open the contact book and the EXPORT option is right at the top of contact name list window. Click, select location and file name (I usually use a date format), and hit save.

If you have McAfee, or other auto-backup program, you can set it to do that automatically.

But to answer your question, it's located down a path found under USERS>?your name?>CONTACTS. The message files are down a long path USERS>?your name>AppData>Local>Microsoft> etc. etc. You can see the full path name in TOOL>OPTIONS>STORAGE tab but the name is so long and the window so short you have to copy and paste the file name/path to a text reader (like NOTEBOOK) to see it all. I got tired of trying to remember that long path so I just created a subfolder under my Document folder and put them all there for easy access. Yep, I'm a lazy SOB.
