No--you downloaded a Virus removal tool:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...E0-E72D-4F54-9AB3-75B8EB148356&displaylang=en

This runs silently by default, but the result log can be found:

%windows%\debug\mrt.log

(for most people, this will be c:\windows\debug\mrt.log)

If you had no infection from the relatively few (but high impact!) bugs
covered by this tool, you'll have a clean log.

This group is related to this beta product:

Ah - Thanks Bill.

Here I was thinking that Malicious Software and Spyware
were somehow related. Silly me.

Sorry to bother all.

I have the same problem. I updated WXP and can find no
indication that the Antispyware program is on my
computer.

I'll add my thanks as well, because I also had the
Malicious Software Removal Tool confused with the Windows
Antispyware program I had read a news article about, and I
was going nuts trying to figure out why Windows update
said the tool was installed but I couldn't find it
anywhere on my system. Turns out it just runs, writes the
log, and then deletes itself. If anyone wants to run it
manually, here is a page to do that:

There is a lot of confusion about the Malicious Software Removal tool, I'm
afraid. I really like the way it works--silently when run via WU or AU and
you have no infection, or with a GUI when run via a web site--there's a link
somewhere on Microsoft.com--or from the downloads.

And (paranoiacs please ignore) it reports back to Microsoft on cleaning
actions--i.e. instead of just measuring downloads of the tool, they are
measuring actual machines cleaned.

I think this initiative will make a measurable difference in the number of
infected machines out there, and the owners don't have to do a thing except
leave AutoUpdate on, or go to WindowsUpdate.

Please read the other messages--you need to click the PLUS sign in front of
the subject header to see the replies to that message.

The Microsoft Antispyware program is not available from WindowsUpdate.
