Where did InstallShield come from?

Tonight, while I'm surfing the Web, a window pops up on my screen called
InstallShield Update Manager Control Panel. I know that InstallShield
is a tool to help install programs, but during three years of running XP
home, I've never seen this panel on my screen, even though I install and
update applications regularly. Why is it popping up after all that time?

Because you have installed a program that uses Installshield's automatic
updating feature. Interesting that it just popped up on my system just
before reading your message. When it pops up again, simply click on it and
it will open up a dialog box with a list of programs on your computer that
use the feature, and also has a setting box to set the frequency and on/off
status.

Thanks for this helpful link....it clears up my confusion. Is there any
downside to using InstallShield, other than the minor hassle of dealing
with the updates that occur?

JimD,

You do not have any choice, the program vendor/creator decides if you're
gonna use InstallShield, Windows Installer or whatever.

I would supect that they go with the low bidder. LOL

Not every application of InstallShield is gonna have that Update Service
either.
