when to publish remote to local?

I've really done it now. I was playing around trying to publish something to
a second website (a new one separate from my first/main site) and not only
was I not able to get anything published to the new site, I did SOMETHING to
my local files for my main site. How I know this is because when I went to
make some simple updates to my main site, it began taking what seemed to be
duplicate files on my local site (but i can't be sure they're
duplicate...there were just so many!) and publishing to my remote site. And
it said it was going to take 10 hours.

I cannot figure out what I did, or why this is happening.

I'm currently trying to publish from REMOTE to LOCAL to see if this
straightens things out locally.

My questions:

1) what could I have done to cause so many extra files to need to be
published local to remote.......and that would take 10 hours?

2) what reasons are there for publishing remote to local? Could I just be
causing more problems by trying this?

and while I'm at it: 3) how do I add a second website (with brand new
files) & work with it within frontpage without screwing up my original site?

thanks so much!

1- Dunno, maybe you have now mixed two webs together though...that's a pain.
2- You Publish from remote to local...usually to recover from a mess you
created on your local site, if your remote is more current than your local.
3- You just create a new web and call it something other than the name you
used for your other web. Webs stored on your local machine can be named
anything you want, but with the .com .net etc...extensions
