When Spell Checking Stops Working...

Hi all,

I upgraded from Office 2003 to 2007 running on a Windows XP machine
recently, and spell-checking stopped working all my Office applications --
Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook! It was a frightening thing to realize I'd
been sending out messages and documents without any little red lines under
the words, but that didn't mean the words were spelled right. And further,
even when I issued the Spell Check command, nothing was flagged as misspelled.

I found all the comments about 2007 allowing you to have "unchecked" styles,
but that wasn't the problem. And it wasn't just the real-time checking that
didn't work. Curously, grammar checking was fine.

Then, completely by accident, when installing an upgrade to RoboForm (which
is great!), I was offered a free scan by Registry Mechanic. I thought maybe
that's the problem, so I took the free scan, which found >1000 "problems".
And then I paid for a license to fix the problems and -- shazam -- the spell
checker is working again!

I recommend Registry Mechanic now wholeheartedly. I was a little skeptical
at first, but the proof is in the results. And, at $29.95 for 3 computers,
less a 25% discount with the coupon code "pctools25", how could I loose.

Now I have another problematic computer I'm going to use it on too!

You are playing with fire using any automated registry cleaning tool. All Registry Tools are snake oil remedies. Even if they do make backups what will you do when you are not able to boot your computer to get to them.

There is a simple fix for the missing spelling feature which you should have used if you waited long enough for the answer.

Again. Do not use any automated registry cleaning tools if you do not know your registry.

Just to finish this post. Try a small experiment. Install any OS on a clean computer and run your registry tool from Registry Mechanic or any other and see how many it will find. About the same amount as it did for you now. And this on a completely clean computer with the OS alone and nothing else installed.

Peter,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, you didn't actually provide the "simple
fix for the missing spelling feature", and I spent about three hours search
for it both here and on several other sites before giving up.

As to the "all ___ are snake oil" comment, I generally agree, and then I
remember that "all generalizations are stupid".

All I know is this worked for me, and while I was having problems with my
computer before, I have yet to notice anything worse, and several randomly
occurring "issues" seem to have gone away.
