When I try to number slides the <#> image appears. How do I fix?

Peter from Maine

I have tried inserting page numbers in my powerpoint slides. I go into the
slide master, and then I insert page numbers. The <#> sign appears in the
footer. I was then hoping that the page numbers would appear in the normal
view. But they don't appear. The <#> sign just appears on every page. Any
idea how to fix?
Thanks.

Did you just type in <#>? Go to master view and remove slide number place
holder then from from format menu or master toolbar clcik on master layout
and it will give you an option to check slide number textbox.

Edward,

Thanks for the help. I did not type the <#>, it appeared automatically. I
tried your advice and the same thing happened. I think I may have a bug in
my software. But I am still open to ideas. Thanks.

Which version of PPT are you using?

Try going to View | Headers and Footers (it's on the Insert tab in PPT 2007)
and ticking the box for the slide number there.

Echo S,

Thanks for the suggestion. I have 2007.

I did what you suggested. When I click the insert tab, and select page
number (and footer), the good news is that the <#> appears. I think this is
supposed to cause the page numbers to appear. But instead, the same <#> just
keeps appearing on every page.

If I have a software glitch, how do I contact MS to have them send me one
that works? Any other ideas?

When you go to Insert | Header and Footer, there are two tabs: 1) Slides and
2) Notes and Handouts.

Notes and Handouts has a "page number" option. Slides has a "slide number"
option. Are you on the Slides tab there? Did you click Apply to All?
