Why does one of the three footers appear on new slide?

In PPT 2007, I have a slide master with all three footer "fields": footer,
date and slide number. Check box Footers is checked in the Master Layout tool
bar. I use two layouts which also have the three "fields" and Footers
selected.

When I switch to Normal view and insert a new slide based on one of the
layouts, one of the three footer fields appear (the footer, not date or slide
number). To get rid of it, I have to manually select the text box with the
footer text and remove it. Why does this appear on new slides? How do I get
rid of it?

Thanks for the input. I have tried that, and it does solve half of my problem
(the symptom you may call it): I get rid of the footer text. But it does not
solve the initial problem (the illness), i.e., the place holder for the
footer text should not appear at all on new slides. At the end I may have to
live with this, but it would be nice to understand why things happen the way
they do.
