slide # from master not appearing

This is occurring in PP2007. In the slide master, the slide number (‹#›) was
added to a placeholder in the footer. When going into normal slide view, the
slide # does not appear. Why?

I then went to the insert tab and chose slide #. In the header/footer dialog
box, I made sure the checkbox for slide number was checked and said apply to
all. The slide # now appeared. Is this supposed to be a 2 step process? If
so, it seems counterintuitive.

Well, yes, there are two parts to a page number:

1. The placeholder
2. Populating the placeholder

You have to have a placeholder on the slide master/layouts in order for the
slide number to have a place to go.

Then you have to actually turn on the slide numbers....
