When I save a document in Word, how can I get Word to automatically insert a
footer into the document with the same name?

Are you asking how to put the filename in the footer? You do this with a
FILENAME field. In Word 2003 and earlier, choose "Filename" or "Filename and
path" from the AutoText menu on the Header and Footer toolbar.

In your document template you could insert a field code which will name your
document whatever you save it as. As the field code will be in your template
you would not have to insert it each time. You go to Insert, then Field, then
select FileName - note that once you select FileName Field options will
appear to your right - if you want the entire filepath select Add path to
filename.
