It comes up with a registery error but a backup or older item is being used
to replace the error in the registry. It works fine but what is causing that
message?

Mcrossly;

Funny, we posted similiar questions around the same time. I get the same
thing and then my MSN acts like it is a new install.

Are either of you running any disk cleanup applications or have an
application that might do this type of maintenance in the background?

Michael;

I'm not running any disk cleanup apps knowingly. In other words, I don't
have a 3rd party app doing this. So it would only happen if XP is doing it.

Could be spyware or malware that installed to the registry and is cause for
this. My roommate had the same problem. He had to restore from a previous
mirrored backup.

Also determine what may have been installed between the good boot-up to the
start of the problem and/or where you have been on the internet.

See Rock's post in this thread. Also, make sure your antivirus software is
up to date and run a scan on your system. Also check for malware, download,
install and run Ad Aware:

I will take a look at the information from Rock's post but a quick review of
it and my error message is not listed there. To answer the other questions

G. Vaught - determine what was installed between the good and bad points.
Only thing installed was SP2 for XP.

Michael - I have McAffee and it is updated weekly. I also run McAffee
Spyware on the machine. I will run full scans for both applications and see
what they come up with. Currently the only applications that get affected
are MSN, recycle bin, and Winzip. I'll post back with my findings after
doing the recommendations.

Michael;

I have Windows XP Home edition and the article that Rock points to doesn't
lists it as one of the Applies to. Should I follow it anyway?

While it doesn't specifically list this issue, there's no reason you can't
use it as a guide to troubleshoot a registry that might be corrupted and
potentially is the source of the problem. You might also want to take a
look at the following Knowledge Base Article about recovering
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;Q307545 from a corrupted
registry:

Another possible source in your case may be McAffee which is a notorious
troublemaker. If you can't get to your desktop, try removing it in Safe
Mode and see if the problem goes away (IF McAffee is acting as your firewall
and you are on a broadband connection be sure to disconnect broadband modem
first and if you are on dialup, do not connect to the Internet until you've
installed a firewall). If the problem does go away, you'll need to discuss
the issue with McAffee tech support and/or check for any updates at the
website that might address the issue. Boot the system, start tapping F8,
when the menu appears, select Safe Mode and press Enter.

All;

First, thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I was little leary of
McAfee as a problem since I have almost an exact 2nd machine in my house to
the one with the problem. I put SP2 on it a month before the one that
developed a problem and it is still stable.

I ran an anit virus check and it came up negative. I ran a spyware check
and it found four entries. I cleaned them and have started the PC 4 times
without the issue.

Again thanks

David
