REGISTERY CLEANUP

P

PETERFST

I've heard about it. Seen websites advertising products about it. Probably
experienced it....................Registery problems that slow down a
computer.
Sometimes I shut down for a couple of minutes to "clear" the registery,
which seems to help. But, for the most part, I just don't understand what
maintenance I should periodically perform to keep it in shape. I defrag every
once in awhile. There's a program for that. I cannot find in system tools
anything to do with the registery.
What should I do for proper preventive maintenance of my Windows XP OS to
keep it healthy?

There is NO maintenance that you need to perform to keep your registry
"in shape".

And to be extremely candid - I'm trying to do you a favor here - your
post shows that you haven't the slightest idea what you're talking
about. So stay away from so-called registry cleaners. Instead, invest
the time to learn how to operate your computer wisely and you'll be much
happier.

Use Google to learn more.

Here's a good start (Googled "keep xp running fast")

Do not use a Registry Cleaner. One is not needed. It can create problems
which are not there and offers negligible benefits when used.

You need an effective anti-virus ( not Norton or McAfee which require
too many resources to run ) and one anti-spyware programme offering real
time protection ( perhaps a second as a backup ). There are a number of
good freeware options readily available. You need to be cautious in the
way you handle email, especially avoiding clicking on attachments or
links where there are unsolicited offers in email. Suggestions for two
programmes which meet these criteria. AVG 8.0 Anti-Virus and Spybot S &
D for anti-spyware.

Regular housekeeping is essential to ensure the situation does not get
out of control. The next paragraph describes a core routine.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

Regularly check for Error and Warning Reports in the System log in Event
Viewer. Seek advice as necessary when errors arise.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Thanx for the responses. Yes, I haven't the "slightest" clue about what goes
on with the registery, other than not to mess around with it. So, I'll read
some more and heed your advise.

*Nothing*, if you're talking about preventive maintenance to the
registry. Here's my standard post on the subject:

Registry cleaning programs are *all* snake oil. Cleaning of the
registry isn't needed and is dangerous. Leave the registry alone and
don't use any registry cleaner. Despite what many people think, and
what vendors of registry cleaning software try to convince you of,
having unused registry entries doesn't really hurt you.
The risk of a serious problem caused by a registry cleaner erroneously
removing an entry you need is far greater than any potential benefit
it may have.
