what spyware programs to run?

I use spybot s & d and also adaware. I also use winsockxpfix and MS
antispyware. I have norton antivirus ans mcafee personal firewall. Even
though i use these i still have things coming up regularly during scans? I
used free registry fixer 2.2 and that said i had broken paths and unused
software entries but i have now removed this program due to advice from
someone, how could i fix these? Also should i use a program called
hijackthis, it was recommended to me but sounds dodgy?

Any help would be appreciatted, cheers!

Use Spywareblaster and Spywareguard to keep nasties from installing on your
computer in the first place.

It's pretty good for a beta...

This should help!

To help stop unauthorized downloads via your activex controls change your
default settings.
These settings are good for XP. The wording should be close for other systems
as well.
Go to control panel and open "internet optionsâ€.
Click on the security tab then custom level.
make sure these settings are as follows.

Download signed active x controls>set to prompt
Download unsigned active x controls>set to disable
Initialize and script active x controls not marked as safe>set to disable
Run active x controls and pluggins>set to enable
Script active x controls marked safe for scripting>set to enable
Java permissions>set to high
Launching programs and files in a IFRAME" > Prompt
Installation of Desktop items"> Prompt
Navigate sub-frames across different domains>prompt

LOL! I didn't feel any need. It was a conscious choice to use negative
reinforcement.

He's been dead for a quarter century.

What you could do, and what is very easy, is that you change from an admin
account to a limited user account. Almost nothing can install itself when
you work with a limited user account. If you constantly get spyware, adware
and viruses on you PC then you surely use an admin account to surf the net
and use your programs. A limited account would not even have the rights to
install browser-plugins, new programs or changes to registry and windows
system files.

The first and most important thing to security is: lock your system down and
minimize access rights. Using software as spybot or ad-aware is just a help
AFTER you catched something, but it doesn't really prevent it (except the
realtime-scanners, but why use them when you could use your CPU-time for
better things?).

I use Spy Sweeper mainly because it got an Editors' Choice from PC
Mag. Pay, but worth it. I don't think the free apps will do sweeps
satisfactorilly anymore.

Still, if stuff keeps coming back you need to figure out why. Running
a router? Running a solid firewall? A good virus scanner?

the level of PC protection you have also depends on what version of the
software you are using. for example, a neighbor of mine is using a copy
of Norton AV 2003 for which he cannot get updated signature files for.
imagine that ? AV software that offers no protection from all the
viruses, worms and Trojans created in the last 2 years. generally
speaking, if you only update your virus signature files once a week,
then you are getting no protection at all from all the viruses, worms
and Trojans created in the last 7-8 days.

as for free spyware programs and online spyware scans, they are only
designed to mop up the infection, After the damage is Already done. the
free versions and free online scans do Not have memory-resident
components that proactively monitor your internet traffic, in order to
intercept and stop spyware from infecting your PC to begin with. you
have to buy the purchased versions of spyware to get components that
stay active in memory, proactively monitoring internet traffic in order
to protect your PC from getting spyware infections.

below is an excerpt from a thread i responded to just yesterday.

i personally use and recommend .........

AdAware Plus by LavaSoft instead of the free version because the free
version does not block spyware from entering your PC to begin with. (it
only removes the infection After the damage has Already been done.),

and a Hosts file from the following web site to make spyware sites
inaccessible: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
