problem opening programs

I have a laptop with XP Home. When I click on an icon to open a program it
opens many instances of the same program. For instance, when I click on
Internet Explorer I sometimes get up to 90 pages that open with my home page.
This happens with several other programs also. Another thing is when I am
in Internet Explorer 7 and I am trying to type into a text box (user name,
password, search box) I get a few letters in and i start hearing clicking
like it is submitting what i have entered.
I have tried running these programs:
Spybot Search & Destroy
Lavasoft AdAware
SuperAntispyware
Microsoft Defender
Avg Antispyware
Avg Antivirus
Panda Online Scan
and probably a few others.
I have found very few things and healed/quarantined/deleted all.
I have updated windows fully. I have tried checking to see if any buttons
on my keyboard are stuck(including the touchpad buttons). I still am having
these problems.

Anybody have any ideas?

how many do you get with
the manual method:

start > run > iexplore.exe

Doesn't matter how I do it. I still get the same result. I also noticed
this morning that the bottom row of keys on my keyboard are misbehaving.
When I hit a key on this row I get mixed results. While typing this message
these keys have the effect of holding the enter key down. So the cursor
starts jumping down lines until I hit another key. While trying to sign in
to this newsgroup it would highlight my whole username each time I hit one of
these keys. And I don't believe that my enter key is working either. While
using it to type this message it doesn't have any effect.

could be a hardware
issue, as you elude to.

but it doesn't sound like
the keyboard and the mouse
would both be defective at
the same time.

are the bad bottom keys
on a "microsoft" brand keyboard?

i have one and a someone
else had a similar issue with
the bottom keys.

---------------------------

you might want to try a test:

there is an on screen keyboard
in the "accessiability" in the
start menu.

try turning it on to get a keyboard
on the screen. then unplug your
regular keyboard so that you only
have the mouse.

then with the mouse, open programs and
use the screen keyboard to click letters
in any open windows. basically
instead of using your fingers
to click on letters, use the mouse
in this case.

what we are trying to do is to
begin eliminating possible causes.

----------------------

another area you might want
to look into is to see if there are
hardware conflicts. if two different
pieces are sharing the same irq,
then one hardware is corrupting the
other.

go to start > run > msinfo32

and look for hardware sharing
your keyboards resources.

first of all this is a laptop. I tried the on-screen keyboard(something I
never thought of) and it works the way it should. No problems typing
anything and the enter key works.
I also checked for conflicts and everything is ok there.

ok,

if the on screen keyboard
works ok then it sounds like
the o.s. is not corrupted.

there are a couple of tests
you might also use to eliminate
the possible causes:

see if the issue is also occuring
in safemode. however, it sounds
like the keyboard issue will likely
be there as well.

another test is to simply connect
a regular / generic keyboard
that has a usb connector and
see if the problem disappates
when you use the external kb
instead of the onboard kb.

plugging in a generic mouse
can also be done as well.

unfortunately, there is no
clear cut automatic answer
for the original question. issues
like these require a step by step
process of elimination. however,
it seems that we are leaning
towards an issue with physical
hardware.

Turned out to be the keyboard going bad. I went ahead and had someone look
at it and he figured it was going out. Had a new one put in and everythings
great now.
