What setting to save movie as?

If I want to capture and edit analog video from my camcorder (via BT878-
based capture card), but then output the edited movie in two formats (1.
NTSC VHS recording on my VCR and 2. SVCD), what's the best set-up for
capture and intermediate file format?

I'm mostly concerned with avoiding artifacts that might arise from
compression (i.e. blockiness in MPEG) or interlacing (i.e. smooth motion).
I don't really understand these issues .... I just want the final result to
look as good as the original 8mm camcorder video tape when it's played back
on my TV.

Here's what I think I need (but I don't have all the details worked out in
my head - so, if anything looks funny or WRONG, don't hesitate to correct
me!):

- Since MM2 can't burn SVCDs, I'll use TMPGEnc. What intermediate file
format should I use when I "save" the movie from MM2?

- Since MM2 can't "output" a legitimate interlaced NTSC video signal, I'll
send it through something like a Pinnacle DC10+. (BTW - if there's a better
way to do this with WinXP and MM2 .. please let me know!). What
intermediate file format should I use here?

I see that there is an option to save a movie as "High Quality Video (NTSC)
"... what is this and is this the best intermediate format for outputting
my edited movie back to NTSC VHS VCR?

Of course, any advice on capture settings/setup or other helpful hints from
someone who's done this before would be appreciated.

thx in advance!

Use DV-AVI for capture and intermediate storage. That will give you the
best quality at 25Mbps.
