What programs/processes need to be closed to install software prog

I'm new to xp coming from Win me. When I used to install new software
programs I'd close all open items with the ctrl-alt-delete, "end task" on
each item in the task monitor screen. I only left systray and Explorer there.

In xp, how do I close all open programs, and processes? which things have to
be running minimum while installing programs?
I'm running a gateway 825GM with media center xp.
Thanks!

Don't worry about doing that.
It's mostly a myth.

I have installed hundreds of applications, dozens upon dozens on any given
machine in one sitting and never do I disable the AntiVirus or stop other
applications from running. I have yet to see it actually cause a problem -
although having your antivirus could slow you down as it will scan files as
it attempt to write them.

My personal view is that far too much attention is paid to this
question (in any version of Windows), and more often than not, it
simply doesn't matter. The reason you are told to shut down any
running programs is because the installation may need to replace
a file that some program has open, and it can't do that if the
program is running.

In the vast majority of cases, just shutting down all running
foreground applications is sufficient (in most cases, even that
isn't necessary). If something that should have been shut down
wasn't, the worst that will happen is that the installation won't
complete properly; but you can always repeat the installation,
being more careful to shut down programs the second time.

So I recommend just shutting down the open programs on the task
bar. Certainly don't try to shut down all processes; many of
those are essential.
