Closing down processes during software installs

Question re the task manager, and new program installs.

I'll be reinstalling my WordPerfect Office 2000 Suite. The suggested route
is to shut down all processes except "Explorer", and "systray" before
starting the new install.

I'm running XP Home with all the latest patches et al. There is no longer a
"systray" item listed. Do you know if it has been renamed by Windows to
something else? I do seem to recall seeing it in the distant past, but I
haven't really paid any attention to that lately

I'm just concerned that if I close everything except "explorer.exe" that
something will be shut down that will cause the system to hiccup and/or
crash.

Any help would be appreciated.

Not needed anymore. Those sound like instructions for win9x systems. Just
install. Heck I don't turn anything off, not even anti-virus and programs
ALWAYS install correctly.

Phil,

Yes, I think those instructions came out before XP did. I have not to date
every shut anything down when doing new installs, and I don't recall having
any problems.

So, I'll give that route a whirl.

That advice is left over from Windows 95/98. In XP it should be enough
to close anything that shows in Task Manager's Applications pane (and
that mostly so that they do not damage their own open files when the
system gets rebooted). And disable real-time antivirus - though that is
not needed with some better AV packages
