What newsgroup should I be on?

I realize this is the wrong group but perhaps someone could direct me to the
appropriate group.

I am interested in "cleaning" up an old bogged down computer's Windows 2000
system. Thing like old inactive registry entries, even new one not being
used, or anything else along these lines. It is a borrowed laptop I am
getting ready to give back therefore anything I do must be 100% safe for the
system.

Thanks in advance... Bob

I'm not aware of any specific Windows 2000 groups on Usenet. You can
set your news reader to search or just scan the list of newsgroups
your provider offers beginning with Microsoft.public.

There non some newsgroups and forum for Windows 2000. I found the
following using Goggle: TecNet has different groups not part of
Usenet.

I think I am not necessarily looking for a Windows 2000 group for 2 reasons.
I think it's more of a general system utilities/cleanup topic and also, to
get good answers I've found you must use a group with a high traffic count
which of course a 2000 would not have.

Oops. I guess that ...win2000 group is still pretty high traffic.

Well, it's certainly not a Windows Vista or XP newsgroup you should be on.
Windows 2000 newsgroups are very active.

Since nobody else answered ...

1. Backup all the data.
2. either:
Use the system recovery disks that came with the PC
or
Use the (or a) Win2K disk to reinstall the OS.
3. Reload 'good' applications.
4. Restore the data.

This is known as reimaging (in the corporate world) or reloading. It's the
only sure way to get rid of all malware.

Works with all versions of Windows (and OSX, and Linux, etc.)

Well I'm not joining / downloading a whole group to answer one
question, but aside from the advice already given BE VERY CAREFUL with
registry cleaners, usually they don't make a lot of difference to
performance.

Download something like the AVG Antivirus and Antispyware and use them
to find / remove anything doubtful, but first if you can do so make a
backup with something like Acronis, preferably on another machine via
network. Uninstall Norton and or McAfee and use AVG or AVAST instead - I
think AVAST may use less resources.

Unless you find any other issues, STOP. :) Not much more worth doing
unless there's a lot of unused stuff to uninstall. And run defragment
when all that you want to remove is removed.
