what news server are you using?

Hi All,

I have been using nntp.aioe.org as my news server.
Its service is really bad. (Sometimes it takes three
days to push and pull from the Internet. It also
misses a lot of replies to your postings. :'( )

What news server are the rest of you using? Is it a
free or a service that can be paid for by check?
I only need text posting and never posting videos, etc..

By any chance does Google have an NNTP server?

Many thanks,
-T

Hi,

new://msnews.microsoft.com

Google does not offer an NNTP server to my knowledge.

You can use MS's own free NG host:

msnews.microsoft.com

You don't need any logins!!

I use several servers. For these Microsoft newsgroups, I use the Microsoft
server, msnews.microsoft.com.

The Microsoft server is free.

Not as far as I know.

For alt and rec newsgroups I use the one my ISP provides, Supernews
(actually a mirror of it on my ISP's server). For the Corel WordPerfect
newsgroups, I use cnews.corel.com. I also use a couple of other servers for
private newsgroups that aren't available to the general public.

You can use freenews.netfront.net to read (won't let you use it to
post). Use aioe.org to post.

No, sorry. I use my ISP which posts well but gets others' posts in days,
sometimes never. For this group I use msnews.microsoft.com for both
reading and posting.

Free Usenet groups are hard to find nowadays. http://www.individual.net/
is only 10 euros (around $13US) a month and when I used it back when it
was free, it was excellent, no binaries though.

Correction: it's 10 euros a YEAR, not a month.

For other than msnewsgroups, use my ISP provided news server. ISP is big
name, but not AOL. Have to be logged in to their network service, then
login to the news server sequentially. Their news server cannot be accessed
otherwise. Leave it at that.

I am using Opera 9 browser for all RSS feeds, including this news group
and a couple of blogs. Its toolbar has a menu item for "Feeds". If you
open any news feed (e.g.,
http://www.nytimes.com/services/xml/rss/nyt/HomePage.xml ) in Opera 9,
a window will appear with the message "Would you like to subscribe to
NYT > Home Page? The newsfeed will be added to the Feeds menu and
automatically checked for updates." You can click Yes or No. I find
this Opera 9 feature quite useful, and suggest you give it a try.

| And subscribe through a real newsreader like Outlook Express.

You mean the one that's so good with everything including yEnc binary files???

You need to learn what a NNTP (news) server is compared to a RSS feed,
before you try and give out such silly suggestions.

I don't think Outlook Express can be considered "a real newsreader". :) In
fact, OE is probably the best malware magnet out there.

Agreed. I much prefer Thunderbird for news.

I disagree. I've been using OE for email since 97 and haven't gotten one
blue meanie with it.

The best malware deterrent is between your ears, not some program.

I used that one for a while but found it terrible, for all Microsoft ng's
I use msnews.microsoft.com and for the alt. ones I use free.teranews.com.
There is a small fee to set up the teranews one but after that and the
initial settling down period it works very well.
My ISP do not carry newsgroups any more, well my ADSL provider doesn't :-(

I believe more ISPs will be going that way. The time will probably come that
few ISPs will be offering usenet, and none will have binary groups on their
servers.
