Optic technology is superb...not too much advance on at the mo.. but circuit technology as in selling camera`s with a&b+c is immense.
Its your choice to seek out bargains ;)

Any particular brand or type to go for?

Hey Chris is this the lens you have? Cos it's cheaper at Amazon than at the link you gave.

And my D40X only takes auto lenses, I assume that Sigma lens is auto?

And while I'm at it, I may get me one of those Macro kits too, but I think I'll probably order from Amazon, purely for ease of delivery, getting the two items together.

Although I still haven't fully made me mind up yet...

Found this lens at Jessops at Bluewater Mall for £99.00 but when I phoned them up they told me it wasn't suitable for a D40X as only auto lenses will work with it. I can actually use a manual function on my lens, it's just that only auto lens will work for some reason.

Damn. Back to the drawing board...

The lens in your SECOND link (Pixmania) is *NOT* the same lens - its the non APO version.

The one you want has a red band around the top see the pic on the Amazon link.

The first one, Amazon, is the correct lens :) I got mine from Fotosense because i needed it guaranteed next day. If it hadn't arrived, i wouldnt have gotten a lot of my fave pictures :)

And yeah - it's autofocus, with a switch for manual focus if you need it, though auto is generally best.

Are you sure Chris? Read this, from Sigma's site:

Nikon D40 and D40x Compatible Lenses

The New Nikon D40 and D40x are the first Nikon body without a built in auto focus motor. This means that any lens used with the D40 and D40x will need the auto focus motor built into the lens. These lenses are called AFS lenses. Sigma has a large line of compatible AFS type lenses. Most of these lenses have the HSM motor in them with the Exception of the 80-400mm f4.5-5.6 EX DG OS (optically stabilized).

Ah right, sorry i misunderstood you.

I think you are correct - it may well use the camera's motor as the lens is quite noisy when changing focus.

I didnt know the D40's didnt have the focus motor!

Aye, tis a bummer :(

I did read many reviews of the D40X before purchase and I knew it only took auto lenses but I don't think I fully understood the implications.

Here's the Nikon equivalent link but I found a shop off The Tottenham Court Road selling it for £325.00.

Still too expensive for me atm though:(

Sigma do a 100-300mm AFS lens with a fixed aperture of 4.0, going to have a look for that now.

Alright smartarse, what's an APO lens? :D

I dunno, tbh

I haven't been able to find anywhere selling the Sigma AFS lenses, which is a bit disappointing.

But judging by the suggested prices by Sigma for selling in America, they are expensive, even dearer than Nikon's equivalents.

It's a lot of money, £325.00, to take a gamble with.

Unless your friend has the absolute same lens, It's kinda pointless comparing.

What I'd need to do is get in a shop that would let me take a few pix with one and then view the result.

Another thing I'm a little confused about is most of the Sigma range of AFS lenses have one fixed aperture and I'm wondering what the advantages/disadvantages would be as opposed to having several aperture settings?

Do Tamron do any similar lenses with a motor built in?

With an an aperture locked at around F4, you will have quite a short depth of field so object in focus and background out of focus. I like photos like that, personally... and a low F/stop means lots of light is being let in so faster shutter speeds.

I dont generally take my telephoto lens above F5 as i prefer the faster shutter speed so less chance of a blurry photo.
