What Is Windows Messenger?

My question isn't really so much Subject, as why does it start running
when I boot up? Until a few weeks ago I never got a message about
providing a display name. How do I get rid of this and a related message
that appears when I bring up my PC?

It's running because you installed it and you have it configured to
start up when the computer boots. If you installed it by mistake you
should uninstall it.

That would seem so, but I'm looking at Add/Remove on the control panel
and see nothing listed under Windows, which lists about 7 programs from
Windows Driver Package to Windows to Windows Service Pack. If I look at
Microsoft, the list goes from MS Net to MS Visual C++; otherwise I see
nothing about Win Messenger.

BTW, I meant to post this in XP.

How do I start Step 1? I don't see it on All Programs.

Windows Messenger 4.0 on a Windows XP Home Edition-based computer
NOTE: This method does not prevent users from manually running Windows
Messenger, but it does prevent Windows Messenger from running
automatically every time that you start Windows.

Change the preferences in Windows Messenger. To do this, follow these steps.

1. Start Windows Messenger.
2. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Preferences tab.
3. Click to clear the Run this program when Windows starts check
box, and then click OK.

Double-click it in the system tray then Tools|Options|Sign In
Thanks. Did it and signed out. I hope that's the last I see of that. How
it suddenly came alive I have no idea.

I have some other tussle going on between a Google and Nero facility.
When I click on an image file, an intermediate soft image is brought up
instead of say one from Paint Shop Pro. Actually, it's not bad, but
which of the two wins seems to vary.

The "Windows Messenger" included with Windows XP has now been replaced
by Live Messenger, hence my preference is to remove "Windows Messenger":

From "Add or Remove Programs" move to "Add/Remove Windows Components"
Section and deselect "Windows Messenger", followed by "Next" and
"Finish"
