when i added new 160 gb hard drive, noticed USMT2.UNC folder which is 1.92
gb. showed up on new drive. do i need it ? thanks for respond.

The USMT2.UNC folder is created when you use XP's
Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. If you do not need
to use the Wizard to restore Files and Settings, you may
safely delete that folder.

Hi Parkash,

The USMT folder (User State Migration Tool) contains the data store, created
when you use Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to collect files/settings
from a PC. If you're sure that you've completed the F.A.S.T extraction to
the new PC, then the USMT folder can be deleted.

How to use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard with a wizard disk in
Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306187

I reinstalled WIndows XP Pro on my PC. Before doing so I ran Files and
Settings Transfer wizard. It appeared to go well (I didn't check closely to
see exactly what files were placed on my removable hard drive).

Once Win XP Pro and all MS UPdates installed successfully, I tried to
restore files and settings without success. I received message "specified
location did not contain stored informatiion". When I looked again, I had a
USMT2.UNC folder with IMG0001.dat, IMG00002.dat files and a status file that
contained "4MSU...".

Any ideas or should I consider the data lost?

I have the same problem with Windows XP Home SP2. I even installed the patch
for the 32 bit to 64 bit but to no avail.

Based on reading some of the many other posts I moved the .DAT files and
staus file into a folder named USMT2.UNC on my new computer's desktop. Next I
browsed to the desktop (not the USMT2.UNC folder) in the file and setting
transfer wizard and <Transfer in progress....> resulted. I had always pointed
to the USMT2.UNC folder and always found the no data error many others report.

Unfortunately a new error appeared -
<undoing changes>
and in a second window <Cannot complete the transfer>
<An error occurred while the wizard was loading your data. The wizard cannot
create the data needed to save your settings. Make sure you have enough disk
space available.>

I have 25 gigs of disk space, but only 512K of RAM in a new Dell Inspiron
6400. I did not even try to transfer settings, only files. I have three .DAT
files named properly (2G, 2G, and 2M in size) and a status file. I tried
running the wizard from new computer desktop and over my home network to my
old computer. Both approaches resulted in the errors.

It was suggested by Carey Frisch [MVP] to one user, to delete all but one
..DAT file. I do find it hard to believe that the wizard created more .DAT
files than it needed.

I just tried running the wizard only on the IMG0001.dat plus status file.
Same error resulted.

And I did check my migwiz.exe and it is the same version on both old and new
computer 5.1.2600.2665 (win32) and 5.1.2600.2185 (i386)

Daveh,

Looks like there is a version mismatch. See checkpoint #2 in the following

I read your page and checkpoint 2. That is why I checked the versions as you
recommened. There are two versions on both machines, one for win 32 and one
for i386. The versions are the same on both machines. You need to explain
further. Are you recommending I delete the .2185 on both machines and keep
only the .2665?

And what about the file quantity limitation?

Thanks for responding.

The versions are the same on both machines.

If the versions are same, then ignore my earlier advice.

F.A.S.T. will not support migrating more than 63,000 files.

If you still have the data in the old computer intact, try collecting the
settings again. If not, you may give the FastConv utility a try. However,
full recovery is not guaranteed.

Hi Ramesh,

Thanks for closing. My conclusion is that I broke a design constraint. Not a
bug really but the tool misses on a customer expectation. Especially these
days where media files are many. A brief readme file may have helped the
unsophisticated user like me.

I appreciate your advice and your time spent. I am going to abandon USMT2
and go manual or perhaps find some shareware.
