Internet Gateway/Internet Connection

It's appeared on my machine. I've installed XP a few times and never
seen it before. This may be the first time I installed an XP/SP1
system _before_ hooking up to an internet. Is this something new in
SP1 ?

It looks like a firewall. Where is it administered ? Can I turn it
off ?

The funny thing is that I installed Zone Alarm on this systyem (I know
I did, it's in my notes) and now I can't find any sign of it on my
system.

This machine is always a client on an ethernet. It's never been hooked up
directly to a broadband service. It's got no third-party ISP crap on it.

What is Internet Gateway ?

I have worked tech support for a few companies, and this
is one of the most common problems I receive.

The Internet Gateway is an attempt from Microsoft to make
it easier for your computer to connect/control the router
that you are connecting to. Personally I don't like it.
It always causes problems. You should disable Upnp in
your router (security reasons) and you should uninstall
the Internet Gateway. If everything is working, then
leave it alone. Famous IT saying: "If it ain't broke,
don't fix it." If you remember that, you will be good to
go.

Here are the directions from the article 821980.
------------------------------------------------------
Click Start, click Control Panel, click Add or Remove
Programs, and then click Add/Remove Windows Components.
In the Components list, click Networking Services, click
Details, and then click to clear the Internet Gateway
Device Discovery and Control Client check box.
Click OK, click Next, and then click Finish.
Restart your computer.

What is Internet Gateway ?

It represents a gateway (broadband router or ICS host) on your network
that gives Internet access to your computer, and it lets you monitor
and control the gateway. For example, if you right click and disable
the Internet Gateway, it causes the actual gateway to disconnect from
the Internet.
